I’m starting this blog entry in the wake of my 2nd hurricane. The first was Isabel back quite a while ago, and now Irene and neither was that big of a deal here at home. The largest possible consequence of Irene is a delay in my trip to Vassar. Anyway, what I’ve been preoccupied with is the thought that I will be in the Caribbean for the rest of the hurricane season. I find this more intriguing than terrifying. I keep thinking about my reaction up here, completely safe, chiefly concerned over whether or not the trains will be running by Wednesday so I can visit Vassar. However, on South Caicos, if a hurricane hits, we’re much more likely to be concerned about, you know, dying. Again, I’m not scared. Not really. This whole experience has served primarily to force me to recognize that I will be spending next semester in a completely foreign environment and I couldn’t be more excited.
Anyway, welcome to my blog (ugh, that sentence feels so self-indulgent). I’ll try to update regularly for you, my dear reader, though internet access will be spotty. I will also be uploading pictures to my flickr. I got this fancy camera and everything, so I should have some good shots. I don’t think I’ll put them on facebook, since I’m going to cut down my facebook activity to only short tidbits to incite maximum curiosity and jealousy. At least that’s the plan.
You can also send me mail, though it will take 1-3 weeks to get to me. I’ll try my hardest to respond, though, if you do :) Email/facebook/text me if you want that address. I will have a cell phone or a calling card, but that may be pricey. All in all, email is probably the best way to get in contact. Well, along with reading this blog religiously.
Ok. So, now that you have all the different ways to contact me, I’m just about ready to leave. Well, I still have to pack, but that seems much less important. I’ll be flying out of BWI at 8:56 on Labor Day, so if you want to show up to send me off, that’s cool. Otherwise, I’ll see you when I’m back in December. I am planning a trip to Vassar to taunt you all while you prepare for finals.
Auf Wiedersehen!
